Abstract

Recent developments in canon law focus on the new Book VI of the Code of Canon Law, which took effect on December 8, 2023. Introduced through the Apostolic Constitution Pascite Gregem Dei and promulgated by Pope Francis, this revision has brought a significantly more rigorous and stringent approach to the administration of penal sanctions within the Catholic Church compared to the 1983 code. The pivotal role of ecclesiastical authorities is highlighted, as they are responsible for applying just and proportionate penalties to safeguard and maintain the integrity of the ecclesial community. The revision also addresses ongoing challenges, such as aligning canon law with secular justice, enhancing the protection of victims, and reforming ecclesiastical penal procedures. Finally, the importance of continuous doctrinal development is underscored as crucial for effectively meeting future challenges and maintaining the Church’s credibility as a sacrament of salvation and unity.
