Bigamy draws its meaning from the antithesis with the term polygamy. Unknown in Roman law, it became an autonomous crime with the advent of Christianity. This issue, read from the point of view of the impediment of bond, was analyzed by the Apostolic Tribunal of the Roman Rota in a sentence Coram Pecorari of 25 January 1939, which affirms the judicial nature of the marriage nullity process against a possible administration.
